Humpback whale

Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box ----- Although I am not a fan of articulation (other than just the mouth) on cetacean figures, I make an exception for this humpback. It has one of the best sculpts and paint applications for this species, which says quite a lot since there are a lot of humpback whale figures out there!

New Ray ----- There are two versions of this model; this newer grey version, and an older blue and pink one. This one I think looks a bit better... the colour, that is. New Ray released a couple of cetacean models, none are very realistic looking. They all suffer from similar problems, i.e. strange looking flukes and fins, incorrect placement and number of blowholes, etc. But, they are quite charming in their own way. Length 13 cm

CollectA ----- The CollectA humpback is in need of a replacement, and I expect we will get one in the next few years. While not that bad, it is far behind other CollectA models currently available in terms of anatomy. The rostrum is very narrow and pointy, the eyes are huge and the placement of the dorsal fin is a bit off. Still, the detail is quite good even on these older CollectA figures, as is evident in the scars scattered over its body. Length 21,5 cm

Papo ----- This large and bulky humpback is one of Papo's older cetacean models. The jaw is articulated showing nice details in the mouth, and the head and mouthline are quite true to the species. It has some problems which would prevent me from placing this figure among the best humpback figures out there, however. The body is too bulky, unless one imagines this might represent a pregnant individual. It lacks a dorsal fin, and it lacks a lot of detail all over. Still, a good humpback. Note that the pectoral fins of mine have warped a bit over time. Length 29 cm

Safari ltd Monterey Bay Aquarium ----- Released in 1991, this is a pretty old whale figure. And it still very much holds up to this day as one of the best humpback figures ever made. The unique shape of the head is pretty much spot on, the pose is beautiful and the detail and size make this a model to admire. There are a few small issues but that would be nitpicking at this point. This model is still in production, and is available with an improved paint job (mine is the older version). Length 36,5 cm

Safari ltd Wild Safari ----- Appears to be a smaller version of the Monterey Bay one. It could work as a calf for the Monterey Bay humpback as the original calf has become pretty hard to find, though it doesn't seem like it was intended to be a calf. Anyhow it is an okay but not great model of a humpback. Length 18 cm

AAA, older version ----- A vintage model that has been out of production for some time, yet still very easy to find. Part of a series of whale and dolphin figures with calves sold by many companies such as Schleich and Bullyland, this humpback is probably the most accurate of the adult whales from this series. Length 24,5 cm

AAA, open mouth ----- This whale was released more recently than the one above, but AAA being a mysterious brand, I am not sure when exactly. It does seem it wasn't in production for very long as it is a lot harder to find than the older AAA. The detail and anatomy is pretty good, but the paintwork is still strange with the green and orange which seem to be colours that AAA liked to use for their whales. Length 24 cm

Mojo, Maia & Borges sculpt ----- This model, like many Maia & Borges models, was sold by Schleich for some time. Now the mould is Mojo's posession, which is good news for a lot of collectors since the Schleich one was getting hard to find and expensive. The paint on both versions is almost identical, and both are heavy solid figures. With its impressive size and tons of detail this model is loved by collectors. Sadly it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of anatomy. The head is V-shaped and very pointy, instead of the characteristic U-shaped head that humpbacks have. The tailstock is very thin and elongated. But it certainly is a wonderful model nontheless. Length 34 cm

Mojo ----- This is Mojo's own sculpt, a smaller but lovely humpback whale. It also has a very thin and long tailstock and the detail is not as great as on the M&B version, but the head of this one is certainly better and I think it is one of the best humpback whale figures in this size range. Could benefit from a repaint for sure. Length 25,5 cm

Larami ----- Perhaps the most lifelike of the Larami whales. The longer body and wide head that Larami whales tend to have fits a lot better for this species. And, the paint is pretty good too. Length 24 cm

Toy Major, 1994 version ----- Like the other whales from this line, this one seems to be loosely based on the Safari Monterey Bay humpback. Not a bad figure, certainly better than the newer Toy Major ones. Length 20 cm

Colorata ----- Part of the wonderful Marine Mammals Deluxe box set, this humpback comes with two throat pieces, one with a closed mouth and one with an open mouth as if it were feeding. It's small, but has great anatomy and detail. Length 10,5 cm

Unknown ----- I have no idea what brand this figure is nor do I know much else about it. All I know is that it's vintage (probably 90's) and it is a fantastic sculpt!
