Fin whale

Recur ----- A nice Fin whale with an open mouth showing the bicoloured baleen. Sadly no asymmetrical colouration on the lower jaws. This figure, like other Recur models, is made of a softer plastic filled with a kind of cotton, however it is a very sturdy model that is not as flexible as other toys made of similar materials. This model seems to be retired but knockoffs are easily found.

Bullyland ----- Bullyland has not made many interesting cetacean models, but this is certainly an exception. Sadly, not many models exist of the second largest animal on earth, and while not perfect, this is probably the best one made so far. It features the asymmetrical colouration found in the fin whale's lower mandibles and the shape of the rostrum and body is quite true to the real animal. The choice of colour is a bit strange but looks quite pleasing. I'm sure many collectors would have preferred a larger size as it's not a very large model. Length 19,5 cm

Larami ----- This model doesn't exactly scream fin whale, with its different shades of blue. But I like it a lot for some reason. It does have a nice slender body, and while probably not intentional, some asymmetrical colouration. Length 34 cm

Sei whale

Safari ltd ----- The only model of the sei whale that currently exists is this one. It's a nice figure overall, with a light curve to the mouthline which is accurate for the species. A nice touch are the spots on the body which represent cookiecutter-shark bites. The figure has some issues as well, for example the pectoral fins have a strange notch on the trailing edges. But we cannot complain too much about a figure of a sei whale! Length 19 cm

Minke whale

CollectA ----- This model, which represents the Dwarf minke whale, is perhaps one of the most accurate cetacean models ever made. The sculpt is nearly flawless, the details are amazing and the paintjob is too. If you're a collector of animal figures and/or a lover of cetaceans and you don't own this figure yet, you won't regret getting it. Length 19,5 cm

Maia & Borges ----- This same sculpt was also sold by Schleich. Not a bad figure, but the CollectA and Safari ltd minke whales are both more accurate. The chevron markings around the shoulder area are sculpted in rather than painted on, which is a little bit strange. Length 24 cm

Safari ltd ----- One of the most recently released cetacean figures by Safari ltd is this common AKA Northern minke whale. While it is hard to beat the CollectA minke whale, it's nice to display both models side by side as they do represent different subspecies. I personally am a fan of whale figures with the mouth slightly open showing the baleen, but it does look a bit like she's wearing lipstick as the pink line is painted directly on the edge of the rostrum rather than where the gum line would be. Length 18 cm
